About the Binary Series:

You may recognize some of these images. There were taken from sketches drawn of old master’s paintings and classical sculptures from around the world. I use representational works- portraits of people that capture some essence of humanity to me. The process puts these images through the sketchbook, into the computer, through 6 stages and back out onto 18" x 24" sketch paper.

They have gone through processes both immediate and analytical. The people shown have been through many filters; interpreted by one artist, reinterpreted by another, and then broken down into data by a computer process. And yet they still maintain their immediacy, humanity and rawness.

Drawing is an act of selection.

A computer is entirely a creature of binary information- everything can be broken down into positive and negative bits of information. Can everything in the world be described in those terms? Quite possibly. But even if it can be, the vitality, the rough edges and passion- these still come through.

This series still in progress.
