(details)

This is (so far) an isolated drawing which uses the computer in an obvious way to mark or alter the drawing, similar to the "Unconcious Exchange" and "Binary Drawings" Series. In this case it is using a computer mark that imitates a drawing technique. The value-bar on the side reveals the image as computer-altered.

Unconscious Exchange Series

These mixed media works begin with chance and go back and forth in dialogue between the unconsciousness of the computer and a stream-of-consciousness/unconscious creation process done directly by the artist. Each individual piece is the collection of the sketches that reveal the dialogue.

They nod to the "exquisite corpse" exercises and exchanges that the surrealists and Da Da artists had between each other, but are instead a dialogue between the artist's unconscious, the computer, and chance, also following a stream-of-consciousness approach to developing the images at each stage.

Binary Drawings

-an ongoing series

About the Binary Series:

They have gone through processes both immediate and analytical. The people shown have been through many filters; interpreted by one artist, reinterpreted by another, and then broken down into data by a computer process. And yet they still maintain their immediacy, humanity and rawness.

Blue Figures-

done on bar and cafe napkins with blue pen in solitary moments during a depressed period. They reflect that particular place emotionally and physically. Later altered digitally.

Doorways

Doorway- Ink on paper
Doorway- pastel on paper

These are two versions of the same church doorway on Newbury St. in Boston. Architecture is always relaxing and fun for me to draw, especially churches. I did a large number of drawings of this doorway in particular. I like putting a different takes on the same thing- bringing out certain moods or qualities, playing with space and color in different ways.

In architecture, because the structure is so definite, there is a kind of freedom to play with how definite it is- to tweak the perception of solidity or stability.
