Idol Hypocrisy

(3/09)

This piece is a commentary on living Idols- charismatic leaders of movements. According to theologian Paul Tillich, Idolatry doesn't stop at religion. It is when we put our force, our actions, our faith behind a symbol of something that is less than the whole. A human idol is fallible. These two live in a state of hypocrisy- acting against the ideals of the systems they purport to believe in and live by.

The frames represent those ideals, the text behind the image, the contradictions.

Black and White- oil on canvas, nails, computer text on paper, acrylic

artists note- this small piece was the springboard for a series I am currently developing on perceived social identity and skin color. I believe in the intricate diversity of each individual human being, and I find it horrifying and fascinating how we categorize ourselves and each other by color. I am using a variety of media and performances to explore the social concepts of race, identity, culture, ethnicity, and social categorization as it relates to skin color.

What is expected, what is considered desirable, undesirable, and how we categorize each other and ourselves based on skin color are all subjects of exploration. Products to darken or lighten, brown paper bags (from the era of the paper bag test), paint, performance, makeup, , digital alteration, questionnaires, interviews.. all these media will help me to explore and expose these ideas.

Rose Window- Acrylic, Oil, Collage, and mica flake on wood panel. (28" diameter)

The Search for Connection- Acrylic, Oil, photo transfer, embroidery floss, embroidery needles, and paper on canvas.

Note: What is hard to see in a small image is the names on the gray labels/stones. The writing in the upper left is intentionally indistinct, but may indicate a reflection or search involving the names. The red is stitching done in embroidery floss through the canvas, over red paint.
