Urban Pulse (San Francisco). Mixed media Interactive Participatory Installation: starch-sculpted cotton, embroidery floss, flask, Bay water, arduino, red LEDs, piezo, pulse sensor, audio recordings and pulses from San Franciscans. (12/2013).
In this interactive sound installation visitors are invited to place a finger on the pulse sensor to have their pulse taken. This triggers the audio aspect of the piece: a story of a San Francisco Moment recorded from someone whose pulse matches theirs. The sound of the story is played by a the flask of Bay salt water using a vibrating piezo plate to convert it into a speaker.
To create this piece I went all over the city collecting pulses and stories, gathering a full range of pulses. The programming and circuit building was done in large part by Chris Saari.
