Stream-of-conciousness, drawing from a scribble- there is an art game where one person does a scribble and the other pulls a drawing out of the scribble. Sometimes if I'm getting too tight with my work I play this game- with a friend, a child or even alone.

I always bring my sketchbook to museums and take notes on the things that catch my eye- a particular use of paint, texture or color, a concept, an excellent composition, a historical connection... they tend to be more writing than drawing, but when I need a drawing to remember a point, it goes in.

(this was at the Art Institute of Chicago)

The first concept sketch for the bridge installation, just after I thought of it.

My first sketches of an idea are like this- loose and scribbly- a bare skeleton to flesh out with my mind. At first, I am the only person who can really see what I'm up to.

drawing quickly in the rain- Stockholm. I did a lot of sketches that day because I was so angry at the woman in the museum for not letting me use my sketchbook in the gallery

Viking Ship, Stockholm "started with blunt pencil, raining still"

In the Zwinger museum, Dresden, Germany. I used the bottom sketch in the a recent painting- taking a scan of the sketch: digitally altering it, printing it on canvas, and then painting over it.
