These groundpaintings were done in the Netherlands on an artist's retreat on a farm with rich clay deposits. We were given a weekend to create what we would out of the materials at hand. The ground itself had so much richness in color that I knew that was what I must work with.

I know that no one can look at these things without thinking about Andy Goldsworthy, but once again- all mediums are fair game as far as I am concerned. Our styles are very different. While I certainly like his work, I tend to be much more fluid and less geometrically abstract than he. As always, pieces like these also bring into question which the artwork actually is- the object or the photographs? For me and my work, it is nearly always both. |
